Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that often appear in the uterus during childbearing years. While some women have no symptoms, for others, fibroids can be debilitating. If you suffer from heavy bleeding, chronic pelvic pain and constant pressure, you may believe a hysterectomy or other major surgery is your only option.

At Premier Endovascular in West Orange, NJ, we offer a modern, highly effective and minimally invasive alternative. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a nonsurgical procedure that treats fibroids at their source, allowing you to find lasting relief while preserving your uterus and returning to your life more quickly.

Understanding the Causes and Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

The exact cause of uterine fibroids is unknown, but research and clinical experience point to a few key factors:

  • Hormones: Progesterone and estrogen, the two primary female hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle, appear to promote the growth of fibroids.
  • Genetics: Fibroids often run in families, so if your mother or sister had fibroids, your risk is higher.
  • Other factors: The onset of menstruation at an early age, obesity and a diet high in red meat are also linked to a higher risk of fibroid growth.

Symptoms include:

  • Heavy, prolonged periods: Menstrual bleeding that is so heavy it requires changing protection every hour, or periods that last longer than a week.
  • Anemia: Chronic fatigue, weakness and shortness of breath.
  • Passing blood clots: Frequent passing of large blood clots during menstruation.
  • Pelvic pain and pressure: A persistent feeling of fullness, pressure or a dull ache in the lower abdomen.
  • Frequent urination: A constant need to urinate, even at night, due to pressure from large fibroids.
  • Constipation or bloating: Difficulty with digestion due to fibroids pressing on the bowel.
  • Lower back pain: Chronic, dull ache in the lower back.

How the UFE Procedure Works

UFE targets the blood supply that fibroids need to survive:

  1. A simple entry point: After you are made comfortable, a tiny puncture is made in your wrist or groin.
  2. Expert navigation: Using advanced imaging, a specialist guides a very thin tube (a microcatheter) to the arteries supplying the fibroids.
  3. Blocking the flow: Microscopic, harmless, biodegradable particles are injected, blocking blood flow only to the fibroids.
  4. Lasting relief: Starved of their blood supply, the fibroids begin to shrink and die, resulting in a dramatic reduction in your symptoms over the following weeks.

UFE vs. Hysterectomy: Know Your Options

For decades, women were told a hysterectomy was the only definitive treatment for fibroids. UFE provides a powerful, uterus-sparing alternative.

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. It generally requires a hospital stay and a long 6-8 week recovery. It is a major, irreversible operation.

UFE is a nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedure that preserves the uterus and resolves the issue at its source. It is performed in our comfortable outpatient center, has a much faster recovery, about one week, and allows for the possibility of future pregnancy.

Choosing UFE means selecting a modern approach that solves the problem without the need for major surgery.

Providing patients with insight into their bodies, disease process and their treatment plans is the type of education they need in order to feel empowered to take control of their lives. This is my approach to medicine. So my philosophy regarding patient care is that everyone’s different. Everybody has their own story. Everybody has their own issues that they’re coming to you for, and the treatment plans and the diagnostic plans should be individualized.
